Yuri Petrov Observation Diary Pt. 2

The Wolf Knows What The Ill Beast Thinks

We start off reiterating where the last episode left off as Lunatic- not that we know his name at this point- kills the repairman. Bunny tries to pursue him but alas, Lunatic has vanished.

Anyway, most of the episode is Bunny angst and other plot stuff, which I won't get into because this is a Yuri Petrov Observation Diary, not a Tiger & Bunny In General Observation Diary. There are, however, a coupla Lunatic-related notes before he shows up again:
  • The heroes end up hypothesizing that Lunatic is affiliated with Ouroborous and the murder victims were all members of the organization being killed off to "plug leaks." This will be revealed to be wrong but I'm making a note of it anyway.
  • There's a scene where some kid kicks Wild Tiger and yells at him for not killing the "bad guys" during a charity show, foreshadowing the effect Lunatic's actions are going to have in the next episode.

About thirteen minutes into the episode the heroes zoom off to the hideout of a crime syndicate they're going to raid alongside the police.

And then, the instant Hero TV goes on air....

Hi Yuri!
It's not really stated but I think it's fairly reasonable to assume Yuri was in on Agnes's plans for this broadcast (since she had to contact the Justice Bureau, where he works, in order to get the go ahead) and that he deliberately timed his attack to start the instant the show does. Because Yuri Petrov is an extremely melodramatic man.

Kotetsu spots Lunatic on top of a nearby electric pylon. (Yuri dear, those aren't very safe to climb.) Lunatic uses his position to cut the power to the area and runs off, Bunny in pursuit, while Kotetsu heads to the church to try and save people.

Bunny chases Yuri around on foot, while Yuri uses blasts of fire to propel himself around like some sort of improvised jetpack. At one point as Bunny's chasing Yuri down a bridge, Yuri looks back at Bunny and makes a scoffing sort of sound. Yuri is pretty obviously leading Bunny around, at one point even deliberately making a beckoning gesture at the hero.

And then... Lunatic starts broadcasting to the heroes.

Yuri: My fellow heroes... I do hope you can hear me.
Antonio: Hey, who was that?
Kotetsu: Ignore it. Just stay on task.
Yuri: The justice you seek is nothing more than a hollow fallacy.

Yuri and Barnaby fight for a bit before Yuri resumes speaking, his speech superimposed over snippets of the heroes trying to save the criminals from the fire Yuri set.

Yuri: You call yourselves heroes, but you can neither save nor punish anyone. Your so-called bravery is all in vain. Why you even bother trying... If you want true justice, only I can give it to you.

Yuri and Barnaby land in a bunch of rubble.

Yuri: What a shame. Is the show already over?
Barnaby: Are you part of Ouroborous?

Yuri stares at him, head tilted to the side.

Barnaby: Tell me.
Yuri: And if I were, what would you do to me? Catch me and rip off my suit? Tear my body limb from limb?
Barnaby: Damn you!

Yuri makes a bunch of.... weird jerky doll gestures as he talks, because he's weird and melodramatic. Bunny throws a punch at him, but Yuri's able to dodge and position himself above Barnaby.

Yuri: Ah, there's the answer I expected. I understand that the justice you and your hero pals believe in only takes you so far. It's all a facade. My name is Lunatic, and you see, I follow my own code of justice.

He aims a bolt of fire at Barnaby, but before he can set it off Kotetsu arrives on the scene and catches Yuri's wrist with his grappler, causing Yuri to drop the crossbow. (Or... whatever it is Lunatic uses.)

Kotetsu: Not today, you psycho bastard! You call what you do "justice?" Well I got another word for it! Murder!

Using his grappler, Kotetsu hauls Yuri down to his level. They wrestle together, attached at the wrist like they're in one of those "two people who hate each other get handcuffed together" episodes.

Yuri: Murder? You have a peculiar way of looking at things.
Kotetsu: Yeah, well your face is peculiar! What the hell's that on your head, a glove?

I think Yuri actually makes an... annoyed sort of noise here? I don't know how to describe it but he does sound genuinely a bit insulted to me?

Yuri: So you're Wild Tiger. I'll be sure to remember you.

Yuri uses his fire powers to burn off the grappling wire and leaps off into the distance.

Yuri: Don't worry, we'll meet again. Where there is darkness in the world, I'll be there to snuff it out.

So, some particular bits of Yuri's dialogue that really stand out to me.

  • "If you want true justice, only I can give it to you." This stands out to me because of how incredibly arrogant it is, really. Only he can deliver true justice- only Yuri (or, y'know, Lunatic) is smart enough, is strong enough, to do true good. He dismisses the abilities of the heroes and, I think, of other people in general.
  • "Ah, there's the answer I expected." Yuri expects Barnaby to attack him, to try and kill him, to put personal vengeance as his priority, and he criticizes Barnaby for this, taking it as evidence that Barnaby's heroism is just a "facade." Considering Yuri's backstory, I shouldn't be surprised if there's a fair amount of projection going on in Yuri's perception of the heroes as fakes.
  • "Murder? You have a peculiar way of looking at things." Okay. So. A quick google for the definition of murder gets us "the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another." All the criminals Yuri's killed so far have definitely been unlawful and most likely premeditated- that is to say, planned out beforehand. So yeah, no, it isn't peculiar that Kotetsu would consider it murder... unless you're of the opinion that violent criminals don't count as human beings. So I'd say the implication here is basically "Killing criminals isn't murder because they're evil and less than human." Yuri will also start bringing up a "sin" motif later on, which I think further shows how he considers the criminals he kills to be unclean, inhuman, generally lesser than "innocent" people.
  • "Where there is darkness in the world, I'll be there to snuff it out."  Weird phrasing here- remind me to compare the dub translation to my sub in-depth later on. Anyway, in this bit of dialogue Yuri implies he's the "light" which obviously fits both with him seeing himself as the person dispensing "true justice" and also him having fire powers. However, he refers to "snuffing out" darkness, which is unusual- to "snuff out" usually refers to extinguishing light, such as by snuffing out a candle.

Yuri reappears in the after credits scene. Barnaby and Kotetsu find out that the surviving member of the criminal syndicate Lunatic tried to kill isn't a member of Ourobourus, and Kotetsu wonders what that means for Lunatic's motivation. In case we haven't already gotten the message that "Lunatic kills people he thinks deserve to die," Kotetsu flashes back to that kid who told him that good guys are "supposed to kill the bad guys," followed by Lunatic saying he follows his own code of justice. I like how this parallel sort of implies that Yuri's code of justice is actually rather childish- or at least, that's how I see it.

Yuri leaves the hospital room where the criminal is recovering, and Barnaby greets him.

Barnaby: Sir, I apologize for all the trouble. I realize you're very busy.
Yuri: No, it's fine. This is just part of my job.
Kotetsu: Being a judge sounds like a tough gig. I mean, you gotta sit through all those boring trials...
Yuri: Well, we judges are here to serve the Justice Bureau, just like you. If there's anything else I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm here to help.

Yuri punctuates his statement with a villainous smirk, ending episode 7.
