Lighty Plays Platinum - Part 2
If you didn't see the previous post, there's an explanation of what the heck this is here.
In our last update we started on our Pokémon journey alongside our weird friend Barry and a bold little Chimchar named Cinnamon, traveled to our first major city, and ran into various shady adults along the way.
* * *

I looked up where to catch Burmy in my pokedex and decided to take a break from training to do that, and then I ran into this guy.
Considering I had to beat the main plot of the game in Pokemon Black- the last one I played- to get any kind of fishing rod, this feels weird to me.
Of course, as it turns out there's no accessible grass for me to go Burmy hunting in yet. At least I can go fishing.
...
Oh, you're gonna be fun to train.

HECK YES.

Alright, that's probably enough training for Route 203.

Maaaaaybe a little.

Well this is sudden!

Vs. Pokemon Trainer Aiden Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a Lvl. 7 Starly and a Lvl. 9 Piplup.
- Aiden opened with Starly, I opened with Ceviche, but switched to Yogurt first turn. Starly used growl so many times but Yogurt, aided a bit by her leer ability, was able to keep her damage output at a steady clip and KO Starly.
- Aiden sent out Piplup, and I switched to Melba. She used growl a few times, Piplup used growl a lot, but was unable to stop the increasing damage output of Melba’s fury cutter.

Yeah you had your one victory against me back on Route 201. Cherish that memory as it’s the only time that’ll ever happen.
Sorry Aiden.
Route 203

Vs. Youngster Michael Summary:
- As one might expect, Michael had a Lvl. 7 Kricketot and a Lvl. 6 Zubat.
- Michael opened with Kricketot, I opened with Ceviche and then switched to Cinnamon. After exchanging leers and growls, Cinnamon one hit KO’d Kricketot. Ceviche reached Lvl. 8 from her share in the EXP.
- Michael sent out Zubat and I sent out Yogurt. Yogurt took out Zubat with a leer and three tackles.

Caught a Zubat! But we'll have to wait 'til later to meet him.

Vs. Youngster Dallas Summary:
- The opponent’s team consisted of a Lvl. 8 (you guessed it) Shinx.
- I switched from Ceviche to Brioche, and she tackled Shinx into KO after opening with three growls.

Vs. Youngster Sebastian Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a single Lvl. 8 Machop.
- I switched from Ceviche to Oreo and KO’d Machop in one hit with wing attack.

Vs. Lass Kaitlin Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a Lvl. 4 Bidoof, Lvl 4. Budew, Lvl. 4 Starly, and Lvl. 4 Abra.
- Opponent opened with Bidoof, I switched from Ceviche to Cinnamon, who was able to take out Bidoof and then Budew with ember.
- Switched to Yogurt for fighting against Starly, she was able to take them out after two tackles. Switched to Melba for fighting against Abra, one hit KO’d with fury cutter.

Vs. Lass Madeline Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a single Lvl. 8 Psyduck.
- Switched from Ceviche to Melba and was able to defeat Psyduck via steady application of Fury Cutter. As it turns out, Psyduck is not part psychic type!

And upon returning to the pokecenter in Jubilife to heal up, we get to meet Garlic!

Awkwardness?? Excuse me???

\o/

...Oh. Right. :(
Oreburgh Gate

Vs. Camper Curtis Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a Lvl. 7 Starly and a Lvl. 7 Shinx.
- Opponent opened with Starly, I opened with Ceviche and switched to Yogurt. Had quite a time trying to defeat Starly- they had Yogurt down to 5 HP so I wound up using a potion so Starly couldn’t quick attack Yogurt before Yogurt could KO them. Both Ceviche and Yogurt leveled up after Starly was KO’d.
- Opponent switched to Shinx and I switched to Brioche. There was a lot of back and forth between leers and growls like a game of stat-changing chicken, before Brioche finally took Shinx out with two tackles. (One of which was a critical hit.)

Vs. Piknicker Diana Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a single Lvl. 9 Bidoof.
- I switched from Ceviche to Oreo, took out the opponent with a mix of wing attacks and quick attacks.

Appropriately, this place has some energetic music.

~And thus Gemma was dragged to the gym~

[aiden voice] "I'm RIGHT HERE, dude!"

rude!!!!

whoever that is.

Well. Sounds like a thing I should eventually do.

More things that will probably never be relevant because I can't really do multiplayer/wifi stuff on this.

I dunno, you are literally the first person to mention 'em by name.

(Powered by a FORSAKEN POKEMON I'm guessing?)

#note 2 self coloring in gimp is not much of a timesaver #admittedly i could put less time into there being a bg

Sounds educational!

I hope y'all learned something today.

I love the dialogue in these games.

In the mean time, caught some new friends at the Oreburgh Gate!
Route 204

Quick shot of my team while I was in Route 204.

Vs. Lass Sarah Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a single Lvl. 7 Shinx.
- Switched from Ceviche to Brioche, after a few growls was able to take out opponent with a pair of tackles.

Vs. Youngster Tyler Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a single Lvl. 8 Magikarp.
- Switched from Ceviche to Gumbo, who proceeded to painstakingly scratch the poor helpless Magikarp to KO.

Vs. Lass Samantha Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a single Lvl. 7 Budew.
- Switched from Ceviche to Oreo, took out Budew with a single Wing Attack. Oreo leveled up afterwards.

Aaaand that's as far as I can go in this route for now.

We also caught this guy while we were there!

Went to Route 207 and picked up some more friends!

SO I was going to assemble a team to take down Roark and grind ‘em but then I went “Wait maybe I should make sure Roark’s back in the gym first.”

Lookit this cute little guy.

Some more coal mining info for y'all.
…And the slag heap had a heart scale in it! I was honestly just wondering if it had an interesting description. (The other two items nearby were a dire hit and a yellow shard, if you’re curious.)
Oreburgh Mine

Into the breach! Not pictured: Me resetting after an Onix used up all my pokeballs refusing to be caught, and otherwise running back and forth panicking trying to deal with my team not being optimized for this dungeon.

And you guys will have to read about every single one!

Vs. Worker Mason Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a single Lvl. 9 Geodude.
- Switched from Ceviche to Brioche, after a few growls we very slowly chiseled down Geodude’s HP while the opponent spammed rock polish and defense curl.

@eroshidya, found ur husband.

CUE: Roark smashing the boulder and me belatedly realizing I shoulda taken a screenshot of it.

And then he left.

Seriously, didn't say "goodbye," or "I'm returning to my gym now," or nothing.

Vs. Worker Colin Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a Lvl. 6 Geodude and a Lvl. 9 Machop.
- Opponent opened with Geodude, I switched Ceviche out for Melba, who proceeded to fury cutter her way through both opponents.

And this should give you an idea of how much the wild encounters kicked my team's ass.

After much flailing I was able to catch this elongated missy!

And here’s the team I’ll be fighting Roark with! But first, THE GRIND. (ง •̀_•́)ง

Whoa! Did not expect to succeed in catching one of these guys this early!

Nice to meet you, little buddy!

Good lord. Sundae here is the fourth shiny I've caught. (Like, in general. I have three in my copy of Pokemon Black.)

Marinade here brought to you in a great ball because I forgot I'd run out of regular ol' pokeballs.

I did not expect Shinx to evolve this early! But am pleased regardless!

Oreburgh Gym

Alrighty- here's our team, it's time to take on the gym.

It kind of loses its effect if you admit to saying it to every trainer who passes through, dude.

And it seems like Aiden got his badge already.

Vs. Youngster Jonathon Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a single Lvl. 11 Geodude.
- Gumbo oneshot KO’d Geodude using water gun.

Vs. Youngster Darius Summary:
- Opponent’s team consisted of a Lvl. 9 Geodude and a Lvl. 9 Onix.
- Opponent opened with Geodude, I opened with Chop Suey. I accidentally selected low kick first, but it was super effective and got Geodude close to KO. a karate chop sealed the deal.
- Opponent switched to Onix and I switched to Coconut. Coconut used magnitude, got Magnitude 7, and reduced Onix to what appeared to be roughly 1 HP. KO’d Onix the next turn with a tackle.

Here we go!
Vs. Roark Summary:
- The battle started off pretty well for Roark, who opened with a Lvl. 12 Geodude while I opened up with Yogurt, blissfully unaware that as a Rock/Ground type Geodude would be unaffected by Yogurt’s spark. I attempted to set up a strong attack via some leers and Yogurt’s charge ability only to discover this fact. Geodude, meanwhile, was able to KO Yogurt through rock throws, including a strong critical hit.
- After Yogurt was KO’d I switched to Artichoke, who was promptly injured by the stealth rock trap that Geodude had set up earlier. However he was able to avenge his injury and Yogurt’s KO by paralyzing Geodude with stun spore and then 1 Hit KO’ing Geodude with mega drain.
- Roark then sent out a Lvl. 12 Onix, and I switched Artichoke out for Brioche. To my surprise, stealth rock was still doing damage. However, Brioche was able to 1 Hit KO Onix with water gun.

- Roark sent out a Lvl. 14 Cranidos and I kept Brioche in the battle to avoid any further stealth rock damage. Brioche continued to use water gun and with one attack was able to get Cranidos’s health into the low yellow range…

- …So Roark tried to salvage the situation by using a potion on Cranidos. Unfortunately said potion couldn’t fully restore Cranidos’s HP and Brioche was able to KO them with another water gun attack.

Victory for Gemma's team!

[...]

Here’s hoping I ever use it- back when TMs were one use only I wound up mostly ignoring them.

And so Gemma has her first badge!

Dude.

So for now, this is the team I’ll be traveling around with until it’s time to go after badge number two. And since Coconut knows Rock Smash now, it’s time to do some exploring I couldn’t earlier!

Oh wait-

[...]

lbr if he had actually counted out the full ten seconds I would have been very very very surprised.

It is very satisfying to be able to do this!

Unfortunately, the lower level of Oreburgh Gate seems to be mostly unnavigable without a bike and/or surf. I did find a big pearl and a TM for Flash down there though.

for god’s sake i don’t have wifi or anything
